Launch of the APSE School of Excellence (APSE SoE)

Dear APSE members,

It is my pleasure to announce the launch of the APSE School of Excellence (APSE SoE). This initiative aims to offer unique learning opportunities for the pavement science and engineering (PS&E) community in multi-disciplinary areas. This is a unique opportunity for the participants to gain knowledge in exciting research areas, network with potential collaborators, and use the information to develop advanced courses in academic programs.

One or multiple groups can join efforts to develop a proposal for organizing APSE SoE. The process, guidelines, and content of the proposals can be found here. In addition, we will soon have an open session with APSE officers to answer questions from the community.

Call for Proposals – September 26, 2022
Hold a Session to Explain the SoE – Date to be announced
Proposals Due – December 2, 2022
Selection of APSE SoE Course and Location – January 8 (During the APSE Annual Meeting at TRB 2023)

The Conference Standing International Advisory Committee (SIAC) and the Organizing Committee (OC) invite delegates to submit papers and to participate in the International Conference on Advances in Materials and Pavement Performance Prediction (AM3P) to be held December 12-14, 2022, in Hong Kong, China (https://www.am3p.com).

The AM3P 2022 conference is inspired by the legacy of the previous four 3DFEM conferences held in Delft and Athens as well as the successful 2018 AM3P (Doha) and 2020 AM3P (San Antonio/virtual), sponsored by TRB, APSE and ASCE Greater China Section, and featured with Prof. Jianlong Zheng, Prof. Amit Bhasin, Prof. Linbing Wang, and Prof. Gordon Airey as the Keynote Speakers.

New University-Agency partnership in South Africa

SANRAL (South African National Roads Agency), the University of Pretoria (UP) and CSIR have agreed on the development of an Integrated Education, National Certification, National Reference and Research Laboratories Facility. The objective is to ensure maximum co-operation between the parties in order to create the critical mass in laboratory facilities and human resources to address the above challenges efficiently and avoid further erosion of current remaining skills. This will enhance the quality and quantity of the outputs as well as avoid costly duplication of laboratory facilities.

The facility will be housed in the newly developed Engineering 4.0 facility, and will consist of the SANRAL National Road Materials Reference Laboratory, SANRAL Training laboratory, an Accelerated Pavement Testing facility, an Active traffic track and an upgraded Concrete research laboratory. The facility also provides for a small reception and auditorium area, with following phases focusing on expansion of the laboratory to other Civil Engineering disciplines, as well as related disciplines.

The vision with the facility is to provide an internationally renowned platform for academic and vocational training support in transportation infrastructure materials testing, a national transportation materials reference testing platform and high quality research facilities and skilled staff.

SAFERUP! Sustainable, Accessible, Safe, Resilient and Smart Urban Pavements

The University of Bologna, Italy in collaboration with 12 other Universities from across the EU and UK have started a major initiative on research and education in the area of pavements and materials: SAFERUP! The initiative also includes several partner universities from across the world.

SAFERUP! aims to provide cities with innovative solutions that will form the future urban paved environment, by training talented researchers in the fields of: smart, recycled and durable paving materials; provision for vulnerable users (e.g. elderly & disabled) accessibility and protection; studying user behaviour; life cycle analysis; wash-off water management and bioremediation; tempered and acoustic pavements; energy harvesting and self-sensing technologies.
